Within the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI), the Latvian State Plant Protection Service in cooperation with the Latvian Food and Veterinary Service, the Estonian Agriculture and Food Board (from 01.01.2021) and the Swedish Agriculture Board has started a Twinning project "Further development of SPS and food safety system in Georgia". The beneficiary of the project is the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia and the National Food Agency.
The main objective of Twinning project is to strengthen the capacity of public administration institutions, by involving experts from EU Member States and building cooperation between countries, to master a functioning market economy and compete successfully in the EU market, while maintaining consumer protection and achieving high food safety standards. The specific objective is to improve the capacity of competent authorities in the field of food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary policy in order to implement the EU acquis.
The project has three components - three main objectives:
- The administrative and operational capacity of the National Food Agency strengthened to ensure effective approximation of relevant legislation.
- Institutional capacity at the central and regional levels to ensure food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary issues and to meet hygiene and safety standards in primary production strengthened.
- Support national implementation of newly approximated food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary legislation.
The duration of the project is 24 months.
