Genetically modified organisms (GMO) are organisms whose genetic material is artificially modified to give it new properties (e.g. to make a plant more resistant to disease, insects or drought, to improve food quality, to increase crop productivity).

The State Plant Protection Service is responsible for maintaining the register of producers of genetically modified crops. Currently, no person is registered in the Register of Producers of Genetically Modified Crops.

Municipalities may issue regulations prohibiting the cultivation of genetically modified crops in a given administrative territory or part thereof.

The municipality notifies the State Plant Protection Service of the established ban on the cultivation of genetically modified crops, in accordance with the sixth paragraph of Article 22 of the Law on Circulation of Genetically Modified Organisms
